Introduction
Cities and regions all around Europe are facing exposure to high levels of
air pollution and the emerging impacts of climate change, which have
detrimental effects on their citizens and their economy.
The European Union has taken many initiatives in this and is supporting
local and regional authorities in their actions to mitigate air pollution
and climate change and to provide updated and comparable information
to their citizens.
Designing, implementing and monitoring mitigation measures is a
tremendous challenge for policy makers and authorities, as is the need
to raise public awareness. A wealth of knowledge and best-practices is
available for cities and regions, which offers ample opportunities for
collaboration.
Let us share our knowledge!

What CITEAIR II is about:
- Provide up-to-date information on air quality, greenhouse gases and emissions in European cities to local and regional authorities, the public and the media and enhance comparability of cities through the interactive website www.airqualitynow.eu (in which 50 European cities already take part) and common air quality indices;
Identify, test and transfer good practice to describe the traffic situation and its impact regarding CO2 emissions in urban agglomerations by a mobility indicator;
Identify, test and transfer good practice to integrate greenhouse gases into existing air pollutant emission inventories for regulated pollutants and to select measures with a combined effect on reduction of urban pollutants and greenhouse gases;
Identify, test and transfer good practice for dedicated urban air quality forecasting addressing different levels of complexity that meet the needs of cities and regions depending on their local skills, resources and level of expertise;
Establish an enhanced user community to assess the relevance of the good practices identified within the project and ensure their applicability elsewhere in Europe. These good practices will inform the preparation of guidebooks and the validated solutions that will be ready for implementation in your city.
CITEAIR II (Common Information to European Air) is co-funded under the European Commission INTERREG IVC programme and runs from 2008 to 2011. The project builds on the experience and users of a previous CITEAIR project (2004-2007, INTERREG IIIC) which among other things developed and implemented air quality indices on the European level and laid the foundations for the supporting website www.airqualitynow.eu.
The Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC, financed by the European Union's Regional Development Fund, helps Regions of Europe work together to share experience and good practice in the areas of innovation, the knowledge economy, the environment and risk prevention. EUR 302 million is available for project funding but, more than that, a wealth of knowledge and potential solutions are also on hand for regional policy-makers.
